My barber sent me the video below. It contains a lot of useful tips on defusing (rather than diffusing) potentially violent situations.
I have read George Thompson's book, and I recommend it highly. Like the video, it tells you how to apply the following advice:
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. (Proverbs 15:1)
Of course, you will not be able to settle all potential conflicts -- especially those involving violent predator/sociopaths -- without violence. Thompson's instruction, however, will help you reduce violent encounters to a minimum, so that you may fulfill the Scriptural mandate to:
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. (Romans 12:18)
