The Injustice of Fighting Fair, 2

Continued from "The Injustice of Fighting Fair"

In the previous post, I told about how, at the age of 12,  I became the focus of attention from some bullies. These guys were not only bigger than I, we were on the opposite sides of puberty.

The favorite tactic was to harass me until I retaliated, then they'd knock the stuffing out of me. Never once did these guys stop and say, "You know what? This isn't fair. I'm bigger and stronger, and it's no contest, so I'm just going to leave you alone."

Fair never entered into the equation. Unless out of desperation I tried something to even the odds.

If , while I was being beaten, I grabbed a face or ear and dug in my nails, or if I kicked, or if I stomped a foot, I was in for double humiliation. After the beating, they taunted me with, "You fight like a girl."

Fighting like a girl isn't "fair." "Fair" fighting is to stand toe to toe and slug it out with someone whom you cannot hurt, but who can put the beat-down on you.

These guys never questioned the fairness of their acts. Just as they never questioned if it was "fair" to slam a hardcover textbook against the back of my head when I wasn't looking.

To them, anything that might tend to even the overwhelming odds just plain wasn't fair.

  1. I used to believe what I was taught (you yourself can guess where the idea was given to me, at least in part although not entirely in full): fists only, to the face or at least upper body area. As in boxing. ONLY. Other ways of doing it, such as so-called Eastern "kick-boxing", were not only unacceptable, they were immoral.

When I was still fairly young I figured out that this wasn't the only view. My eventual conclusion can be deduced from what I will freely admit.

I am a very, very dirty fighter.
