Foolproof Self Defense?

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. (2 Corinthians 4:8-10)

Have you ever wished for a foolproof method of self defense? A lot of people do. Some marketers will pander to foolish people who fantasize about a system that makes them invincible.

Those who buy into such promises will often look for opportunities to test out their newfound foolproof method. Rest in peace.

I thought of this today after getting a link to a blog post by Tim Larkin in which he talks about "lousy self defense realities." He addresses the fact that circumstances sometimes (often?) stretch beyond your ability to exercise complete control.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating: You can do everything wrong and defeat an orc; you can do everything right and still die at the hands of an attacker. The difference is Providence.

That does not mean you shouldn't train. It means that you must acknowledge that the triune God ultimately orders all things after the counsel of His will.

The only foolproof defense lies in knowing that, live or die, your destiny rests in Christ's covenant faithfulness to His people.
